Alternative Energy

Alternative energy is a term that suggests there is an undesirable source of energy opposite it. As such alternative energy sources are defined in many ways by those who are marketing the use of a particular source of energy. In the 21st Century the term refers to fuel sources meant to replace or supplement existing sources, the uses of which are damaging and polluting as a byproduct.

Alternative energy in the 21st Century is typically defined as any source that excludes fossil fuels and nuclear energy, whose damaging influences include climate change and the storage and disposal of radioactive waste. The whole point, regardless of the reasons, is to find and utilize renewable, sustainable sources of energy for the good of everyone and the Earth.

There is plenty of controversy surrounding the definition of alternative energy. There is equally as much discussion about other popular terms, such as ‘clean coal’ technology and other terms whose actual definitions do not match up with how they are marketed to the world. It is unknown how long people will continue to argue semantics before actually solving the problem.
