Energy Conservation
Energy conservation refers to decreasing the amount of
energy used by each person, home, company and government on the planet.
What began as a sort of kooky hippie social movement has become absolutely
essential to continued human habitation of the planet Earth. A lot of
people still believe the problems to be invented or that they are too
massive to change.
Energy conservation easily can begin at home with just a few simple
actions:
• Audit your home/apartment’s energy usage – the U.S.
Department of Energy has easy-to-read literature describing how to check
and improve insulation.
• Lower thermostat on water heaters – repair leaking shower
heads and faucets as soon as possible.
• Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) with an EnergyStar
rating.
• Wash clothes in cold water using specialized cold water detergents
whenever possible.
• Only wash and dry full loads – this tip also applies to
the dishwasher.
These tips only scrape the surface of what each person can do to reduce
impact on the environment. Especially if you have the money and resources,
it is so easy to do a little reading and implement more drastic measures
that are good for the home as well as for the good of the planet.
